ABOUT THE ARTIST

Award winning architect William Oliver, noted for his architecture and his art in concrete, has created a collection of paintings in acrylic medium. His unique repertoire, created over 30 years, features realistic, abstract impressionism, non-objective, linear, and geometric forms.

His paintings have been featured at The Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo and at The University of South Florida. The exhibition, William Oliver: Evolution of Movement, explored Oliver’s long-standing engagement with abstract expressionism, particularly throughout the 1970s.

Many of the works were created using a palette knife to carefully capture specific moods and moments, while others incorporated more spontaneous techniques, including the direct mixing of paint on the canvas, both wet and dry. This approach resulted in a dynamic interplay between control and freedom, reflecting Oliver’s ongoing exploration of movement and evolution within his work.

The exhibition honored Oliver’s late wife, Nancy Wooten Oliver, whose life and influence profoundly shaped both his personal journey and artistic vision. Nancy passed away due to complications from multiple sclerosis.

William Oliver: Evolution of Movement reflected not only Oliver’s development as an artist, but also his personal commitment to raising awareness and support for finding a cure for multiple sclerosis. Giclée reproductions of works from the exhibition were made available for purchase, with proceeds supporting educational programs at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art and the National MS Society.

“Nancy and I had a wonderful life together until MS took her away. It was her wish and my desire that a cure for MS be found, so that others would not suffer the same fate.”
